Young Torino defender Angelo Ogbonna has been called up by Italy coach Cesare Prandelli for the friendly match against the Republic of Ireland on Tuesday, after Alberto Aquilani was injured in the Azzuri's 3-0 victory over Estonia in Modena last night.
Whilst the match against Giovanni Trapattoni's Irish side is only a friendly, and Ogbonna is by no means guaranteed to gain his first cap in the match, it certainly shows that Prandelli thinks highly of a player who has only played 23 Serie A games in his career, with many of those coming as a substitute. In a season of disappointment for Torino, the continued emergence of Ogbonna has been a positive, as the vice captain was arguably Toro's best player this season, and is expected to make a big money move to a Serie A club after Torino's failure to gain promotion.

That was a very nice news...I'm glad for him cause he's a great guy, down to earth and very humble, and he deserves to wear that shirt. It's very sad, though, to know that the total lack of any real plan by our "great" chairman means that he'll be sold as soon as possible, just like Rolando.

ReplyDeleteI expect Angelo to leave in the summer aswell, but who knows. Now that Prandelli has shown he would be willing to call up players playing in Serie B, then it would perhaps be better for him, to play every game for Torino, rather that only play 10-15 games for a Serie A team.
He's on very very low wages at Toro aswell, so it could be possible to treble his wages in order to convince him to stay, and if Bianchi left, make him the captain too.
I began supporting Torino in 2005, I was on a family holiday to Milan and decided that I should choose an Italian team to support.
After reading in a magazine about Il Grande Torino and Superga, there was no doubt that Toro would be my team, and even after all the heartbreak they have caused since 2005, I don't regret my decision for a second.
I went to my first game at the Stadio Olimpico in 2006, (and lost 1-0 to Fiorentina) and have been to five games in total and have yet to see Torino win yet, so I fear I may be a bad luck charm.
